In a chapter 7, generally, the discharge is issued about five months after the case is filed. This does not mean that the case is closed – because sometimes chapter 7 cases do result in a distribution of money to creditors and that keeps the case open for longer period time than five months. In a chapter 13, the discharge is not issued until the end of the plan. Chapter 13 Plans run from a minimum of three years to a maximum of five years.
