In almost all cases, cosigners are not protected if you file bankruptcy. Only in some Chapter 13 cases is it possible to protect cosigners. Therefore, if you file bankruptcy you must understand that anyone who has cosigned for you will not be protected by your bankruptcy and can be sued by the creditor to collect on the debt that is being discharged.
